Influence for Organizational and Career Success (Part Two) Applying Your Influence: Strategies to Manage Up and Lead ‘from the Middle’

Abstract

Introduction
Influence, or the ability to convey ideas in a way that can be accepted and supported by others, has long been recognized as essential to transform creative ideas into implementable value-added initiatives contributing to organizational and career success. In this two-part series we explored personal influence in Part One – what it is, why it’s powerful, and how to develop it. We also dispelled the myth that effective influencers are typically extraverts and shared tips for quiet influencers. We wrapped up Part One with advice on how to have better, more influential conversations. In Part Two we discuss how to effectively apply influence while managing up and leading ‘from the middle’ to positively impact your organization and career. This includes different styles of managers and tips for building strong relationships with each type. We also explore criteria decision makers use to decide whether to support your ideas and new initiatives and Influence Strategies for leading from wherever you are in your organization.
