Innovative Best Practices for Developing Leaders from the Nation’s Best Collegiate Leadership Programs!

Abstract

I recently had the honor and privilege of participating in a Leadership Development Conference hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. This invitation-only event included 70 leadership development professionals from many of the very best undergraduate leadership programs in the country including all
five military service academies, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Arizona State University, Rice University’s Doerr Institute of Leadership, and several other U.S. academic institutions, plus the Japanese Coast Guard Academy. The goal was to share best practices and lessons learned for developing leaders at the
undergraduate level; future leaders who will initiate and develop innovative solutions to complex issues and challenges. The Conference was an excellent start to what many participants hope will be the beginning of a multi-year collaborative effort to improve leadership development in our military and academic institutions. One of the positive outcomes of such an effort is the enhancement of programs to develop future innovative leaders seeking creative solutions to complex challenges.
