“Influence for Organizational and Career Success” (Two-Part Series) Part One: Developing Personal Influence to Advance Ideas

Abstract

Influence, or the ability to convey ideas in a way that can be accepted and supported by others, has long been recognized as essential to transform creative ideas into implementable value-added initiatives contributing to organizational and career success. In this two-part series we’ll explore personal influence in Part One – what it is, why it’s powerful, and how to develop it. We’ll also dispel the myth that effective influencers are typically extraverts with strong outgoing personalities and share tips for quiet influencers. We’ll wrap up Part One with advice on how to have better, more influential conversations.

In Part Two we’ll discuss how to effectively apply influence while managing up and leading ‘from the middle’ to positively impact your organization and career. This will include different styles of managers and tips for building strong relationships with each type. We’ll also explore criteria decision makers use to decide whether they will support ideas and new initiatives and 12 Influence Strategies for leading from the middle.
