Practical Innovation in Government: Observations, Tips and Best Practices
Front‐line Leaders Transforming Public‐Sector Organizations: I recently read a fascinating book
entitled Practical Innovation in Government: How Front‐line Leaders are Transforming Public
Sector Organizations by Alan Robinson and Dean Schroeder. It’s hailed as a thorough guide to an
exciting approach managers at any level can use to transform their piece of government. The
authors conducted a six year, five‐country study of 77 government organizations – from small
departments to entire states. Fifteen of these organizations were identified as exceptionally high
performers with efficiencies and provided services equal to the best private sector companies.
The authors tracked eight successful organization‐wide continuous improvement initiatives,
observing the strategies leaders used to transform their organizations and found that the
predominant private sector approaches to improvement don’t work well in the public sector,
while practices rarely seen in the private sector can prove highly effective...
