Planning and Preparing Workforce for AI

Background:

AI is a transformative technology that affects the future of the workforce. This Administration has laid out an action plan to expand and accelerate the adoption of AI across the Federal government. The plan aims to eliminate regulatory barriers and promote innovation in AI, accelerate the adoption of AI across the federal government, and increase workforce skills in AI through recruitment (for example, the US TechForce initiative) and training and development.

As agencies navigate to embrace this new technology, the key to successful AI integration lies in approaching AI as a powerful tool to enhance rather than replace human expertise.  Identifying where AI offers efficiencies and improved impact, and where humans are required in order to provide value and manage risk, will be an important step in architecting the new norm of AI-supported work.

Overall Project Objective and Mission:

The purpose of this project is to support government’s adoption of AI with models, methods and best practices relevant to the Federal context

  • Develop actionable approaches to workforce planning that accounts for Agentic AI tools and capabilities.
  • Surface challenges that will require more analysis and exploration
  • Share adoption best practices from industry and government leaders in integrating AI into their operational environments.

Project Approach:

The project have two workstreams which will run concurrently:

  1. Workforce Planning: This workstream will develop recommendations for tools and methods that support agencies' staffing plan requirements.  The project will (1) identify Agentic AI tools that can support workforce planning; (2) gather lessons learned from agencies undergoing workforce transformation, with the goal of refining the AI models that support strategic workforce planning; and (3) create model persona and scenarios agencies can apply to their workforce planning.
  2. Organizational Adoption: This workstream will gather and disseminate best practices from both Industry and Government for evaluating organizational readiness for AI. They will invite industry to present their AI adoption examples. From these examples, the team will develop a Readiness Framework (maturity model) that agencies can use to accelerate AI adoption.

Outcomes:

Workforce Planning: will develop a paper with methodology recommendations.
Organizational Adoption: Industry best practice webinars/presentations; Paper with Readiness Framework (maturity model).
