Call for Project Volunteers: Strengthen Collaboration and Impact

ACT-IAC Institute for Innovation and the Federal Innovation Council (FIC) are seeking volunteers to support a collaborative project focused on increasing collaboration through access to people, practices and case studies on innovation.  This project team will identify and curate existing information from government and private sector sources; and organize it for easy reference and access across by government and industry members using digital tools and collaborative forums to share, learn and leverage.  This includes assessing and adapting the current NUCSL (National Use Case Library) to serve as the digital library for this purpose.

Background

Delivering mission outcomes for the public, in the face of many internal and external challenges, often requires creative, breakthrough ideas approaches or solutions. These innovations provide useful patterns and practices that can be used by others to accelerate change if shared in a timely manner and with information (e.g., practices, processes, data, decision models, etc.) that can be quickly leveraged.  The key to building a culture of innovation is to make is so leaders don’t have to “relearn the same lessons” or have to search to identify what’s already been tried.  A key competency of innovative learning organizations is proactively sharing thought leadership, highlighting examples and case studies, and capturing lessons and recommendations for others to follow.

In that same spirit, this project will seek to: (a) increase accessibility to existing relevant innovation content (e.g. practices guides, maturity models, decision tools, and case studies) and (b) add to that library new insights and guidance that has broad relevance.

Project Deliverables

  • A curated and accessible set of documented thought leadership, examples, case studies and lessons and recommendations available in digital, web-based form
  • The design and launch of the Meet the Innovators Forum to broaden awareness of innovation across the federal government and create a platform for highlighting and sharing.
  • Launch "Innovators Spotlight" to highlight federal government innovators on the digital tool/website, in ACT-IAC newsletters, and during ACT-IAC and FIC meetings.

Key Activities

Potential activities include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Identify and inventory existing reference material that provides information about practices, examples, case studies, lessons, training, and other “thought leadership” on innovation
  • Identify the sources and how to access this current information.
  • Develop target vision for sourcing, maintaining, accessing and updating reference material.
  • Design repository – e.g. revise/rearchitect the NUSCL (or replace)
    • Data model
    • Access
    • Security
    • Quality management and configuration management
    • Sustainment process and level of effort
  • Develop communication campaigns to explain and encourage contributions to the library and use of the material

Invitation to Participate

A government-wide resource like this can prove to be an accelerator for agencies to drive change!  If you are interested in helping to define, document, and advance innovation practices in government, we welcome your participation! We are looking for contributors with a range of perspectives and experience levels, including those with backgrounds in public sector innovation, research, training, change management, program design, and collaboration across government and industry.
