John Piletich

John Piletich

Director, U.S. Department of State

John Piletich is a U.S. Foreign Service Officer serving at the headquarters of the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. and covering Information and Communication Technology (ICT) foreign policy in South Central Asia and Eastern Europe.  He is also the lead on distributed ledger technology (DLT) and blockchain in the State Department’s Economic Bureau.  He combines a multifaceted international experience base with a proven ability to launch new initiatives to promote ICT development and build the State Department Economic Bureau’s strategic vision on blockchain.  In 2019, he was awarded a State Department Superior Honor Award for his work on Fifth Generation (5G) communications policy.  In 2018, under the leadership of U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cyber and International Communication and Information Policy Rob Strayer, John served as Campaign Manager for the successful U.S. Government campaign to elect Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin to a senior leadership position at the International Telecommunication Union, for which he was awarded a State Department Meritorious Honor Award.  John previously worked on strategic policy at the United Nations, including in Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.  He speaks Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian fluently, has good knowledge of Macedonian and Bulgarian and a basic understanding of Greek.
