Nomination and Selection Guide
NOMINATION AND SELECTION GUIDE
Overview: ACT-IAC’s Institute for Innovation seeks nominations to recognize highly innovative IT products, services, systems and solutions that benefit government (federal, state, local and tribal) and citizens. The Showcase provides an educational forum to feature the “best of the best”. Last year, almost 400 individuals from government and industry visited the Showcase that featured the Top 30 innovations and voted for the most innovative solutions with demonstrated benefits. During the Showcase, many attendees discovered solutions to similar challenges in their offices and made contacts that enabled them to advance their missions. To be eligible, nominations must be about innovations that were conceived, developed, deployed, or upgrades in the last two years.
Finalists will be selected based on the highest scores from a panel of evaluators comprised of ACT-IAC member volunteers. Only information submitted on the nomination form will be used to determine the finalists. Finalists will be invited to demonstrate their innovations at the Showcase event. The “science fair” type atmosphere provides the setting for attendees to discuss solutions and lessons learned with the finalists. Social media voting adds to the excitement of the day as the crowd votes for their Top 8 innovations. Once announced, the Top 8 proceed to the stage and give a 5-minute “pitch” on their innovation to the audience. Social media voting will be used again to determine the overall Igniting Innovation award winner.
Awards: The Igniting Innovation Award is given to the best overall innovation as determined by social media voting by the audience. Dynamite Awards are given by a panel of roving judges at the Showcase event. The judges will select the innovation that best fits each of the following categories (this is not part of the attendee social media voting):
• Impacter – can be government to citizen, government to business, government to government or internal efficiency innovation. Judged on greatest magnitude of results and benefits including both quantitative (e.g. number of people, magnitude of dollars, etc) and qualitative (e.g. improvement in customer experience) aspects.
• Game Changer – either a disruptive innovation that creates a new market or significantly impacts an existing one or a major breakthrough on a longstanding problem. Judged by magnitude of change in performance or creation of new capability not previously available.
• Transformer – innovation that uses existing technology and transforms or extends existing capabilities resulting in new or broadened applicability and use.
• Incubator – not–yet-deployed innovation with greatest potential to enhance services to citizens or government operations (must have at least a working prototype).
All nominations must reflect innovations conceived, developed, deployed, or upgraded in the last two years.
The Selection Process:
Step 1: Submit a nomination by January 12, 2018. A panel of judges comprised of ACT-IAC members will read and score the nominations. The scores will be averaged to select the finalists.
Step 2: Mid-February: Notification letters will be sent to everyone who submitted nominations either notifying them of their selection as a finalist or thanking for the submitting a nomination.
Step 3: Early March: Finalists will be sent an exhibitor packet and instructions with information critical to the Showcase exhibition event.
Step 4: Finalists are encouraged to join ACT-IAC in promoting the event. Voting for the Top 8 finalists and the award winner will only take place at the event. All attendees are encouraged to pre-register and download the Igniting Innovation Conference and Awards app before the event. On-site computers will be available for those who cannot download the app due to corporate/government restrictions.
Step 5: Event day May 11, 2018. Finalists will exhibit their innovations and attendees will vote to select the Top 8 best innovations and the overall Igniting Innovation Award winner. Finalists will receive exhibit space, award certificates, exposure as leaders in innovation on the ACT-IAC website, broad media exposure and the opportunity to be selected for the Igniting Innovation and Dynamite awards.
